According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 80 percent of new skin cancer cases will be basal cell carcinoma, 16 percent are squamous cell carcinoma and 4 percent are melanoma.

  • Know your skin and family history; if you're fair-skinned, you're at a greater risk for skin cancer
  • Be aware of any occupational exposure you may have; compounds such as coal tar and arsenic present additional hazards to your skin
  • Know your body; develop a regular routine to perform self-examinations to detect changes in your skin
  • Report any changes; voice your suspicions or concerns to a professional
