Moles, Lesions, Skin Tags, and Warts

Warts are a condition treated by Gardner Dermatology and Med SpaThere are several growths and lesions on the skin that are very common and benign (non cancerous). These may include moles, benign lentigines, freckles, skin tags and seborrheic keratosis. The vast majority of moles are not dangerous. Moles that need to be checked medically are those that look different from the other moles. If the mole is itching, painful, bleeding, or changes color, height, size or shape it is important to have it looked at by a dermatologist. Moles that have irregular borders, various colors or are dark should also be checked.

The following ABCDEs are important characteristics to consider when examining moles. If a mole displays any of the signs listed below, have it checked immediately by a dermatologist. It could be cancerous.

  • Asymmetry. One half of the mole does not match the other half.
  • Border. The border or edges of the mole are ragged, blurred, or irregular.
  • Color. The color of the mole is not the same throughout or has shades of tan, brown, black, blue, white, or red.
  • Diameter. The diameter of a mole is larger than the eraser of a pencil.
  • Evolution. The mole is changing in size, shape, or color.

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer. The most common location for melanoma in men is the back and in women, it is the lower leg. Melanoma is the most common cancer in women ages 25 to 29.

Not all skin cancers look the same. Many skin cancers are not dark in color. If you are unsure about a mole or growth on your skin, call Gardner Dermatology & Med Spa to schedule a skin exam.

Most of us have had a wart somewhere on our bodies at some point in our life. Warts are small, usually painless growths on the skin caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). Most, but not all, are generally harmless. Many warts will disappear on their own over time but it could take several years.

Types of warts include:

  • Common warts, which often appear on your fingers
  • Plantar warts, which show up on the soles of your feet
  • Genital warts, which are a sexually transmitted disease
  • Flat warts, which appear in places you shave frequently

Over the counter medications may be used to treat some common warts. There are also various freezing, surgical and laser treatments available to remove or treat warts. If you have unwanted or unsightly warts and would like them removed, call Gardner Dermatology & Med Spa to schedule an appointment.
