There are many causes of scalp hair loss for both men and women. Losing 100-150 hairs per day is said to be normal by experts.
Human hair naturally grows in three stages:
- Anagen -- active hair growth that lasts between two to six years.
- Catagen -- transitional hair growth that lasts two to three weeks.
- Telogen -- resting phase that lasts about two to three months. At the end of the resting phase the hair is shed and a new hair replaces it and the growing cycle starts again. (About 10% of hair on the scalp is in the telogen stage at any time).
The overall aging process is most commonly to blame for problems with thinning hair and baldness. Sometimes lifestyle can be to blame: stress, hormones or changes in diet can cause a temporary hair loss. Loss of hair can be a sign of other problems or health conditions and it is important to seek medical attention if you begin to notice you are losing more hair than normal. Dermatologists specialize in problems of the skin, hair and nails and have several methods of determining or diagnosing what is causing your hair loss or scalp problems. Call Gardner Dermatology & Med Spa to make an appointment to discuss your concerns with hair loss or scalp.
