Topical tretinoin cream is a retinoid used to treat mild to moderate acne and is the active ingredient in the prescription drugs Retin-A and Renova. Tretinoin appears to affect skin cells by stimulating the cell turnover rate and cell division. Shedding of skin cells then occurs in a more normal fashion, unplugging blackheads and whiteheads (comedones), the initial changes in acne formation.
